It's June, meaning school's out and a number of architecture schools are naming new deans. At least four announcements have come within the last seven days: Lesley Lokko was named dean of the Bernard and Anne Spitzer School of Architecture at the City College of New York (CCNY); Harriet Harriss was named dean of Pratt Institute's School of Architecture, replacing longtime dean Thomas Hanrahan; yesterday Dan Pitera was named the new dean at University of Detroit Mercy - School of Architecture; and just today Reed Kroloff was named the new dean at the IIT College of Architecture.

All appointments are newsworthy, but IIT's announcement bubbles to the top because of the school's international renown (it's the school that Mies built, after all), the fact Kroloff is the first non-interim dean since the departure of Wiel Arets in 2017 (Michelangelo Sabatino served as interim dean for two years), and because of Kroloff's credentials. He formerly served as dean at Tulane University School of Architecture in New Orleans (2004-2008), was director of the Cranbrook Academy of Art and Art Museum in Michigan (2007-2013), and before those academic roles he was editor in chief of Architecture magazine.

Kroloff is founding principal of jones|kroloff, a Chicago-based "advisory on selecting architects and designers," which played a role in the High Line and Whitney Museum of American Art in New York City and has "led architect selection processes at some of the nation's top educational institutions." He has also worked with the Chicago Architecture Center (formerly Chicago Architecture Foundation) as its senior advisor on programs and industry collaboration.

In a statement on IIT's website, Kroloff said:

The thought of being part of the College of Architecture’s legacy is so exciting, especially given how remarkably well it has been sustained by the students, alumni, faculty, and staff, right down to the recent renovation of S. R. Crown Hall. I get goosebumps simply approaching the building. Much of that comes from knowing you are joining a place, a history, and a movement that has brought so much innovation and positive change.

Kroloff will assume the position of dean at IIT College of Architecture on August 1, 2019.
