Stanton Williams were commissioned to design new offices for Wiltshire Council on a sensitive historic site at Bourne Hill, Salisbury.

The new Council building is a marriage of a new building and the restored Grade II* listed Bourne Hill House. The new building has 2600m² of flexible, open plan offices that enjoy generous views of the surrounding gardens. Externally, it is given presence and scale by a full-height colonnade set in front of its glazed elevations and there is thus a strong relationship between the architecture and the external landscape. The design incorporates an integral low-energy strategy in order to achieve an ‘excellent’ BREEAM rating.

Bourne Hill House has been fully restored. It had been subjected to a series of detrimental external additions and these accretions have been swept away, reinforcing the architectural integrity of the house. On a sensitive site and within an historic city, the final design was arrived at following an extensive process of consultation with the local community and with expert bodies including English Heritage.
