The NEW New York Skyline

Those who have visited New York City in the last few years have no doubt noticed that more buildings are under construction and many of those buildings are tall. The National Geographic feature that looks ahead to what Manhattan may look like in 2020 shows the bulk of these towers are centered in Lower Manhattan and Midtown Manhattan, the traditional locations of skyscrapers on the island.

Amongst the East River skyline views (at top is Lower Manhattan) that mix existing buildings with towers completed since 2004, under construction, or in planning, Nat Geo highlights three areas: the five-tower World Trade Center complex, the $20 billion Hudson Yards development, and the so-called "Billionaires' Row" along 57th Street south of Central Park.

Although more about height than design, density and other factors, the commendable visualizations give a strong sense of how much bulk is being added to these parts of Manhattan and how architecture continues to shape the skyline. Notable towers in the mix include BIG's proposed 2WTC and Rafael Viñoly's 432 Park Avenue nearing completion.
