Following mentorships by David Chipperfield, Peter Zumthor, and Kazuyo Sejima, architect Sir David Adjaye has been selected as the architecture mentor for 2018-19 in the Rolex Mentor and Protégé Arts Initiative.
Adjaye is one of four mentors announced in Berlin on Monday during the closing ceremony of the 2016-17 mentorships. The others are musician Zakir Hussain, choreographer Crystal Pite, and writer Colm Toíbín.
In the past we had to wait a few months between the naming of the mentor and his/her protégé, but a new schedule and additional funding on the part of the Rolex Arts Initiative means we already know Adjaye's protégé: Mariam Kamara, an architect from Niger who is principal of atelier masōmī and professor of Urban Studies at Brown University.
In the new schedule, the next round of mentorships (2020-2021) will consist of film, theatre, visual arts, and "a variable eighth mentorship." So the next architecture mentorship may not occur until 2022. Whatever the case, Rolex also announced that "protégés who have completed their mentorships will become known as Rolex fellows who will be invited to apply to a collaboration fund for joint projects."
Adjaye's National Museum of African American History and Culture in Washington, DC, was recently named the Beazley Design of the Year 2017.
Visit the Rolex Mentor & Protégé website for more information on the program.
