Az W's 'I ♥ ARCHITECTURE' Winners
John Hill
19. October 2016
1st Place: John Fraser, Untitled, Birmingham, Great Britain, April 2016
Architekturzentrum Wien's Photo Award 2016, which goes under the motto "I LOVE ARCHITECTURE," sought photographs of buildings completed within the last fifty years. A jury selected ten winners that are featured here.
If the winner is any indication, the jury was drawn to photos illustrating contrast, particularly in regards to context (the fifth-place winner echoes this approach). In the case of John Fraser's untitled first-place winner, a reflective swoosh (a Gehry?) cuts across the historic context of low-scale brick buildings in Birmingham. As Az W wrote on their Facebook page, "The photo illustrates the transformation of an industrial town into a service industries city and opens up room for different interpretations. What do we see here? And, above all, where are we here?"
All of the winners are on display until 8 November 2016 at Architekturzentrum Wien's Az W Shop, while the first place winner, John Fraser, receives an Eames Plastic Chair by Vitra.
