On Saturday the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) announced that Team Austria, made up of students from the Vienna Institute of Technology, is the winner of the 2013 Solar Decathlon, held at Orange County Great Park in Irvine, California.
Team Austria's LISI house consists of three indoor and outdoor zones in modular timber construction enclosed by a flexible façade. The house is designed to use every part of a tree—from heartwood to the bark—so all of the surfaces and even furnishings are made from wood. This idea extends to Team Austria's communication concept (for which it won another DOE award), which uses hand-carved wooden menus and recycled cellulose for handouts and more (pictured). Be sure to check out the LISI website for more information on the house and plenty of photos of the finished house.
