Yesterday evening World-Architects stopped by the Storefront for Art and Architecture to check out the Situation NY installation by Jana Winderen and Marc Fornes / THEVERYMANY, on display until 21 November 2014.
The porous pink walls of the blobby creation announce themselves from the sidewalk, exploiting the hinged-panel storefront facade by Steven Holl and Vito Acconci. This is one of those installations that take advantage of the gallery's narrow and tapered space, creating something intimate yet uncanny. Although the statement on the Storefront for Art and Architecture website esoterically says the installation "raises questions about context, sensorial readings, estrangement and the uncanny tangentially resonating with contemporary debates around the ontology of objects," Situation NY's appeal is more sensorial than intellectual. The sights, sounds and movement of bodies through the spaces – both inside the installation and between it and the Storefront space – combine to create an otherworldly experience.
