Austria's state of Tyrol has been awarding exemplary buildings every two years since 1996. The winners of the 2020 awards were announced during an award ceremony held online on November 11.
Tyrol is proud of its architecture, boasting of its notable buildings "from medieval castles and fortresses to state-of-the-art gondola stations" on the state's main tourist website. Many of the state's most notable contemporary buildings respond to its Alpine context and cater to tourists and recreation, but this year's awards show buildings in education and other sectors coming to the fore.
Seventy-five projects completed between 2018 and 2020 were submitted for "Auszeichnung des Landes Tirol für Neues Bauen 2020" ("Awards from the State of Tyrol for New Buildings in 2020"), organized by aut (architektur und tirol). The three-person jury* visited some of the buildings and then decided on the 18 nominated projects. Yesterday they named three winners and six recognitions, plus four honorable mentions.
The 13 winning projects are listed below, but visit Austria-Architects for more information (in German) and images. And if you live in Austria, an exhibition of the projects opens on December 1st at aut in Innsbruck.
