DesignIntelligence (DI), the Atlanta-based company "dedicated to the business success of organizations in architecture, engineering, construction and design," has released the results of its annual survey of thousands of architects, academics and students that determines the best architecture schools in the United States.
The results have been published at Architectural Record, accompanying an article by DI CEO David Gilmore in which he argues for the "disciplined transformation" of both the profession and academia. Gilmore's call for challenging "destructive patterns of entrenched thinking" and creating "a new landscape of intellectual contribution" is well intended, but most people look at these lists to see if their school cracked the top ten or to determine where to go to school.
So above are the top tens for both graduate and undergraduate programs, as well as comparisons of 2019 to the previous eight years. A quick glance reveals very few surprises, with the usual number-ones on top (Cornell and Harvard) and the rest basically shifting within the other slots in the top ten. A couple surprises: undergraduate Cooper Union is in the top ten after many years in the teens; and ditto graduates Princeton and SCI-Arc, which were 22nd and 13th last year.
