Copa Beach Pavilion – a landmark for Vienna’s Danube Island

Across from the Danube Island – Vienna’s popular recreational area on a 21km-long artificial island built in the 1970s – a newly created recreational area called Copa Beach has been constructed. This area includes a small, modular pavilion used as a bicycle rental facility.

The pavilion and roof are based on a simple modular system that can be freely combined. The pavilion module has 3 different front sides: as a seating niche, with a large free glazing or with a sliding sunshade made of wooden slats. The roof module is available in two versions: as an open roof with lamellas or as a closed, waterproof roof. The wooden slats shield the interior from strong sunlight. On cloudy days, they are pushed to the side to let in light and air. The seating niches attached to the facade provide spontaneous places to sit and rest or enjoy the view of the Danube.
