Alexanderplatz, Berlin’s Neue Mitte (new centre), will become an important commercial centre for the city. In accordance with the development concept laid down by Hans Kollhoff, this centre is intended to establish a link, in terms of building quality, with the Berlin of the pre-war era. In this context ‘critical reconstruction’ means, to a particular degree, creating a connection between traditional building forms and contemporary design. The new shopping complex is intended to be read as a large urban figure, despite the differences between the various building parts. The shopping centre itself is made up of five autonomous building elements that form a compact ensemble with their internal squares and streets.
