The car race in Le Mans provides the setting and the occasion for the ‚Audi Tower’ project. The tower exemplifies the company’s motto ‚Vorsprung durch Technik’ and stands for the brand values of Audi. The 24 hour duration of the race is made visible by different day and night effects and impressions. The ‚Audi Tower’ is situated at the southern rim of the Audi Campus and thus defines the perimeter of the public space. The tower is made up of a continuous surface which expands from the base to its peak. The base not only constitutes the point of support but is part of the overall design geometry and marks the origin of its dynamic development. The tower emerges out of the surface of the piazza. Its geometry is inclined and folded until it reaches verticality in a 13 m tower. All surfaces of the tower are reflective – varying degrees of reflection of the mirrored-glass give the impression of dissolving materiality as the tower unites with the sky. The reflective steel base is an accessible platform which attracts visitors and enables a direct contact with the monument, the ACO - the race’s host, Audi and the winners of the 24-hour car race. The names of all winners are applied to the glass panels of the lower part of the tower. The diversity of functions is enhanced by different media elements which carry the information content of the tower. A projection surface is embedded in the front surface above the base which shows different media feeds and movies. The chronology of the 24-hour race is experienced by circumferential light rings which are lit hourly from bottom to top (other lighting configurations are equally possible). The Audi logo as well as the ‚24-heures-du-Mans’ logo are mounted at the top of the tower. The ACO logo is positioned on the surface of the base.
