Stimulating nonchalance

How do you motivate students to donate blood between the lecture hall and the canteen? This was the question we faced when designing a blood donation room on the main campus of the University of Hamburg. The answer is an unusual interior design that eliminates possible anxieties of embarking on something new with a winking nonchalance.

The clear spatial impression is characterised by design details that interpret the blood donation theme in a playful way. Tiled or smooth walls provide a hygienic impression and at the same time, serve as an image medium for medical icons and the writing “Blutsgeschwister”. Red lines and pipes appear to be blood vessels. The stylish design has a stimulating effect. Since its opening, the “Bloody Thursday” event has been held every Thursday with great success.
