Directly opposite the Tempelhof Airport a small new district was developed which offers a vibrant Berlin mixture. Just around the famous venues Columbia Hall and Columbia Theater various traders have settled.
The outer ring is completed with a neighborhood development consisting of an apartment building along the Schwiebusser and Friesenstraße. The building complex on Columbiadamm 37-43 is the urban capstone in this development. Like all other new buildings it is grouped around a central green and quiet courtyard that can be used by all residents.
The architectural design adapts to the materiality, color and height of the surrounding neighborhood and the very nearby airport buildings. The commercial and the residential parts of the building are connected with a continuous basement using the same materials and quality. The single-storey transparent joint on the 1st floor and the very concise undercut give a floating and sculptural appearance to the large building in the view along the Columbiadamm. The consistently used narrow clinker bricks and the semi-transparent panels give an elegant tranquility to the ensemble and bind all parts of the building together forming a visual whole.
