This house is located in a quiet residential neighborhood in Tokyo. Directly off the street, a concrete parking area sits below a “floating” concrete mass formed by the front of the building. Behind this driveway is a green courtyard, and behind this is the main entrance, ensuring the privacy of the residents. The courtyard fluidly connects each element of the residence through a spiraling circulation system that starts at the entrance and moves up to the second floor living and dining space.  Plants and light from the courtyard bring a sense of nature and passing time to the interior, while the spiraling design constructs a continuous seamless space.

In the center of the house sits a roofed terrace facing the courtyard. The residents enjoy spending time with family or alone in this secure, private space. Although it is surrounded by the busy city life of Tokyo, the house provides a comfortable environment pervaded by a sense of the natural world and the quiet flow of time.
