The dormitory for employees of NSENGI is located near the company’s main enterprise, an iron foundry in Kitakyushu. The garden functions both symbolically, through its use of materials and shapes, and practically, as a multi-purpose space that encourages interaction between dormitory residents.
A windbreak made of trees forms the garden’s backbone and defines its spatial sequence. The green backdrop reflects life in the dormitory, and, by introducing a stage on which a range of activities can unfold, brings variety to the garden and heightens its appeal.
The white strip that bisects one of the garden’s grassy slopes points directly towards the site of the Higashi Daiichi Blast Furnace, opened in 1901, rendering visible the flow of time in this historic industrial district.
