The offices on the 4th floor of the Dusseldorf Stilwerk design centre were redesigned for Omnicom Media Group Germany (OMD), one of the world’s largest media agencies. De Winder won the competition sponsored by OMD in 2014.

In close coordination with the client an office landscape was created that promoted communication and team work with a mix of open spaces, retreats and collaboration areas. It also assures both transparency and discretion, enables rapid orientation within the space and reflects the agency’s creative character.

The reception area and communication zones were completely redesigned. However, the floor plan was simply opened up in the workplace areas along the exterior and interior facades.

The redesign gave the newly conceived reception area a prestigious upgrade, with its central counter and directly connected conference zone. The large conference room was conceived as a “space projecting incompleteness”, where staff and clients are “part of the outcome”. With a ceiling plane of scaffolding poles for additional lighting and presentation elements, the room can be arranged flexibly for both internal meetings and interaction with clients. A new video conference space, three small meeting rooms, a waiting area with media wall and a communication space for spontaneous conversations complement this zone.

Some of the existing glass wall inventory in the workplace areas was removed to enhance flexibility in team work. Added acoustic panels can be used as pin boards and offer visual privacy in the sequence of rooms. A new zone with temporary work places was also created for flexible use.

The redesign of the space produced a significantly larger number and variety of room sizes and types for meetings. Various large presentation rooms are distributed throughout the floor. Communication zones between the exterior and interior work places function as team interfaces and places for spontaneous staff interaction. Their colour schemes provide orientation with the space. Four telephone booths, three kitchenettes with tall tables for stand-up meetings or copy and service centres are available for this purpose. New lamella and wooden structures on the ceilings highlight these new communication areas.

The new, expansive cafeteria and lounge area were also integrated into the space as the result of a staff workshop. Due to flexible furnishing, it can be used for training, talks and internal workshops, while also serving as an internal meeting point for staff interaction.
