Even in its present form, the Sachsenwald Primary School is a collage with the original structure of Hans Müller, visible from the south-western corner gable and the curved, horizontally oriented building from the 1950s. The ensemble of buildings is listed as a monument of the state of Berlin.
The additional rooms for all-day care were accommodated both in the old building and in a small new building. The original master house in the old building had to give way to the new kitchen. The new caretaker's apartment is located on the roof of the old building. With the additional new building, the school will continue to be built and adapted to the current requirements of an all-day school. The room program includes a canteen with kitchen, three group rooms and an additional classroom. The new building opens generously to the school garden. In summer, school children can have lunch on the terrace, enjoy biology lessons in the school garden, or simply romp on the meadow.
The three-storey extension provides a counterweight to the three-storey south wing of the dynamically curved school building. As a glass structure, it sets an independent contemporary accent over the existing building components, made of plaster and red brick. At the corner of Sachsenwald- / Lauenburger Straße, the primary school, which is in great demand among pupils and parents, opens up to the public street.
The project (total cost about € 1.2 million) was funded by the IZBB programme (Investment Future Education and Support).
