The Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) has announced the winners of the RIBA Awards for International Excellence, twenty buildings that are now in the running for the RIBA International Prize 2018.
The 20 winners were culled from the 62 projects named in December 2017 and "were selected following a rigorous judging process which involved visits by members of the RIBA Awards Group and an architect local to the region," per a statement from RIBA. The jury — chaired by architect Elizabeth Diller with jurors Joshua Bolchover and Wayne MacGregor — will narrow down the 20 projects to a shortlist of 4 projects in September with the winner revealed in November.
Gustavo Utrabo and Pedro Duschenes, founders of Brazilian architecture firm Aleph Zero, are recipients of the RIBA International Emerging Architect 2018 for their Children Village in Formoso do Araguaia, Brazil, carried out with Rosenbaum and one of the 20 winners. The Emerging Architect award is given to a studio in operation for ten years or less.
The biennial RIBA International Prize was launched in 2016 as a replacement to RIBA's Lubetkin Prize. The inaugural winner was the UTEC - Universidad de Ingeneria Y Technologia in Peru by Grafton Architects (curators of the Venice Architecture Biennial, opening later this month) with Shell Arquitectos.
