What were the circumstances of receiving this commission?

The commission started with an ideas competition in 2017 that was initiated by a client who wanted to sell the plot. We won the competition, the client sold the plot, and we subsequently developed the project with the buyer.

What makes this project unique?

The Hoso project is characterized by its cylindrical design, which optimizes space organization and flexibility. This shape reduces circulation areas and increases usable space and typological versatility. By centralizing the infrastructure and opening up the layout to the outside, the design maximizes space utilization and adaptability. The facade provides solar and acoustic protection, while the balconies add both functional and aesthetic value.

Another distinctive feature is the innovative use of prefabricated concrete structures, which allows for rapid construction, with each floor being assembled in approximately one week. This method ensures high quality, minimal environmental impact, and adherence to tight construction schedules.

What is the inspiration behind the design of the building?

The inspiration for the Hoso project came from the desire to optimize spatial organization and flexibility. Conceptual references include iconic structures such as the Tower of Pisa and the Tower of Babel. The cylindrical form minimizes circulation areas, increases the salable area and enhances versatility. This form provides 360-degree views and establishes the iconic presence of the building, differentiating it from the competition. The design addresses multiple challenges including space optimization, tight construction schedules, and the creation of an iconic structure with additional features such as balconies and a rooftop.

How did the site impact the design?

The location on Porto's largest university campus and the common height of 12 stories
between neighboring buildings had a significant influence on the design of the Hoso
project. The cylindrical form was chosen to maximize the number of habitable units
within the permitted building heights and areas, allowing for more residential units than a traditional rectangular structure while respecting height restrictions.

The facade was designed to reduce solar gain and traffic noise, and to act as an acoustic barrier and privacy filter. Circumferential balconies add functionality and aesthetic value, while the upper and lower levels provide communal spaces with panoramic views, integrating seamlessly with the surrounding infrastructure and enhancing the urban landscape.

How does the building relate to other projects in your office?

Although some of our projects are tall buildings, each project is unique, tailored to its specific context and requirements. As a result, the design language of one building is not directly related to that of another. However, all our projects share a common approach: they are based on comprehensive analyses of historical, programmatic, technical, and environmental aspects. For example, Hoso uses prefabricated elements to meet construction deadlines and adapts its form to optimize the specific needs of the site.
