The new addition and garden preserve the Asplund Library concept as a temple of books while bringing a modern layout and new technology to its readers. Easily accessible by the subway, Asplund Library, Observatory Hill, and Odengaten Street, the garden links the heart of the existing temple to its people. At ground level, the land undulates with neighboring topographies to create a diversity of contemplative, educational, and inspirational spaces. Visitors in the surrounding building interact with book and modern media displays that are mixed with lounges for reading, discussion, and lectures. The building gently enfolds readers with plots of books arranged by subject, encouraging its guests to wander between departments as if finding their way through a colorful flower patch. The garden visually connects the interior and outdoor spaces of the existing building and new extension, creating a haven for visitors while enhancing the library’s place in the community as a source of knowledge and inspiration.
