The latest architecture-themed short film from the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art features Marc-Christoph Wagner speaking with architect Lina Ghotmeh at her studio in Paris about the Stone Garden apartment building in Beirut.
Ghotmeh's first completed building in her hometown is located on the edge of Beirut's city center, not far from the explosion that ravaged the industrial port in 2020. Featuring facades of concrete and local earth hand-combed by artisans, the tower — designed to meet earthquake codes — survived the explosion with few scars. After that event Ghotmeh found that the small openings in the facades inadvertently recalled the "bulleted facades that were just eaten up by the war" that ended in 1990, while the larger ones can be optimistically "where nature can grow" and "become places of life."
