Two Wins for Gang

In September 2015 we reported that the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Overseas Buildings Operations (OBO) shortlisted six design firms in the two-stage selection process for the new U.S. Embassy Compound in Brasilia. Per a 8 March 2016 statement from the OBO, Studio Gang Architects "was selected from a very talented shortlist" that included Diller, Scofidio + Renfro, Morphosis Architects, Pelli, Clarke, Pelli Architects, Rafael Viñoly Architects and Steven Holl Architects. Further, "Studio Gang presented a strong and cohesive team approach with more than 20 years of collaborative experience executing projects with complex constraints at challenging sites."

The statement continues: "The multi-building campus will be situated on the existing 4.8 hectares (12-acre) Chancery complex within the city's 'Diplomatic Sector' near the seat of the Brazilian government.  The project will rebuild the compound and includes: a Chancery, Marine Security Guard Residence, support facilities, perimeter security, and facilities for the Embassy community."

As part of its annual Women in Architecture awards, AR named Jeanne Gang as Architect of the Year for the Arcus Center for Social Justice Leadership, a building with a cordwood masonry facade in Kalamazoo, Michigan. More information on the award and the building can be found in the video below:
