LANDSCAPE FUTURES: Centennial of the Department of Landscape Architecture Celebration and Symposium

Celebrate The Centennial of the Department of Landscape Architecture at the Weitzman School of Design during LANDSCAPE FUTURES! This two-day event features a symposium and receptions on Thursday, September 26, 2024 and Friday, September 27, 2024 in Meyerson Hall. 

On the evening of Thursday, September 26, hear updates and future visions for the School and the Department from Dean and Paley Professor Fritz Steiner (MRP’77, MA’86, PhD’86) and Catherine Seavitt, Chair of the Department of Landscape Architecture, followed by a keynote address by James Corner (MLA’86), founding partner and CEO of Field Operations. Corner served as the chair of the Department from 2000–2012. A celebratory toast will follow.

On Friday, September 27, the afternoon symposium LANDSCAPE FUTURES will launch with an opening keynote by Anne Whiston Spirn (MLA’74), the Cecil and Ida Green Distinguished Professor of Landscape Architecture and Urbanism at MIT. Spirn served as chair of Penn’s Department of Landscape Architecture from 1986–1994. 

The symposium will include three moderated panel discussions: The Household of Nature, The Astronaut, and The Naturalist. The symposium will close with a talk by Jeff Goodell, author of The New York Times best seller The Heat Will Kill You First, among six additional books on the environment and the climate emergency. 

After the symposium, join us for a reception featuring special musical guest, DJ Farrah Flosscett.
